In 1987, the Delta HF 4WD completed a one-two finish on the inaugural Monte Carlo Rally. This victory was only the first of many, as only Timo Salonen in a Mazda 323 4WD in Sweden, Hannu Mikkola in an Audi 200 quattro on the Safari Rally and Bernard Béguin in a BMW M3 on the Tour of Corsica managed to win.

In the Drivers' World Championship, Lancia made it a hat-trick, with Kankkunen taking the title on 100 points ahead of Biasion and Alén. After winning the first two rounds of the 1988 championship, the car gave way to the ‘Integral’ version of the Delta, which immediately won the third and fourth world rounds, in Portugal and at the Safari in Kenya.
