The VW 1303 has its origins in an American bill that was ultimately never enacted. Among other things, this bill stipulated a minimum distance between the windscreen and the driver’s head, which in the Beetle could only be achieved by using a curved windscreen. VW built the car anyway – and marketed it in the USA as the ‘Super Beetle’.
