Launched in 1989, the Mazda MX-5 reactivated a vehicle segment overnight that the market research departments of almost all car manufacturers had predicted had no future - the small, purist roadster in the tradition of English and Italian vehicles. Instead of the mere 5,000 vehicles planned for the first year, almost 141,000 units were sold. The worldwide success of the MX-5 brought numerous imitators onto the market, but with few exceptions they were discontinued without a successor.
