If the marketing people had had their way - there should never have been a Golf GTI. Fortunately, a handful of enterprising engineers disregarded this and created a vehicle whose abbreviation is still synonymous with sportiness in the compact class today.
The first Golf GTI was available in just four colours before the facelift in 1978 – we opted for black. Because it emphasises the sporty appearance of the Golf and we think it's the perfect choice for the 50th anniversary of the “GTI”.
