Corgi

Corgi Toys was founded in 1956 in the UK, specialising in the manufacture and sale of scale models.

The Corgi brand was created by the Mettoy company based in Northampton, England. Mettoy had already been making pressed tin toys since 1936.

The name Corgi was chosen for three reasons: it was short and sounded good, it was close in sound to the competitor Dinky Toys and it was associated with the Royal Family, who were fans of the dog breed of the same name.

The first scale models appeared in 1956 and were replicas of the British cars of the time: Ford Consul, Austin Cambridge, Morris Cowley, Vauxhall Velox, Rover 90, etc.

In December 2006, Corgi merged with Master Replicas and was acquired by Hornby in May 2008.
