In 1968, the Inter-national Automobile Federation (FIA) decided to introduce a new «sports car» class with engines up to five litres capacity for the following season. Porsche, a car manufacturer based in Zuffenhausen near Stuttgart, began developing a new car according to these new regulations and presented the new Porsche 917 on the shores of Lake Geneva in March 1969. Porsche entered three 917’s in the 1969 Le Mans 24 hours, all of which had to retire but already offered a glimpse at the enormous potential of the new 4.5 litre sports car. In 1970, the car underwent numerous modifications, including the new short tail bodywork and an enlarged 4.9 litre engine. For the first time, Porsche managed to clinch overall victory at Le Mans and won no less than seven of the eight rounds of the World Sports Car Championship.
Norev’s model, race number 23 (chassis number 917-023) competed at the 1970 Le Mans 24 hours and was driven by Briton Richard Attwood and German Hans Herrmann. Starting from fifteenth place on the grid, both factory drivers overtook one car after another, taking the lead at three o’clock in the morning. This was Porsche’s first overall victory in the world’s most important endurance race, after numerous class wins in previous years.
