The Abidjan - Nice Rally (also known as the Côte d'Ivoire - Côte d'Azur Rally) is one of the inspirations for the future Paris - Dakar. Here, motorbikes and cars battle it out for overall victory. The first edition, organised in 1975-76 by Jean-Claude Bertrand (creator of the Côte d'Ivoire Rally), saw a third of its competitors reach the finish, and it was a 4×4 that won. The following year, the ‘cars’ rebelled and it was an R12 that won! In fourth place was Christian Pouchelon's Renault 17.
